Tackling summer construction site theft using wireless IP transceivers

Wireless IP transceivers can solve a practical problem on changing construction sites: getting IP video between locations where permanent cabling is difficult, disruptive or likely to be moved. A point-to-point wireless bridge can connect cameras or a remote network position back to the recorder without trenching, provided the radio path, bandwidth, mounting and power are properly planned.
Construction-site crime remains costly. That figure should not be treated as theft losses alone. Temporary layouts, valuable equipment and periods when a site is unoccupied make layered security important throughout the project.
Why wireless can suit a live site
Permanent cable is still the right choice where a protected route is available. On active sites, however, groundworks, changing compounds and temporary welfare facilities can make fixed routes impractical. Wireless links can be repositioned as the site develops, and the equipment can potentially be reused on another project.

Getting the link right first time
Ofcom's current rules are important when specifying equipment. Fixed Wireless Access equipment in the 5725–5850 MHz band is now licence exempt, and the regulations implementing the change are in force. Equipment must still comply with the applicable technical conditions and interface requirements, so check the licence exempt status before deployment.

Specifying CCTV around the link
A 2 camera CCTV system may be enough for a small gate and compound, while 16 camera CCTV systems can suit larger layouts where the coverage requirements justify them. ANPR cameras can support vehicle-access management and provide registration information within recorded footage. CCTV monitors can provide a suitable local viewing point for site teams.
Where the risk assessment justifies them, active deterrence cameras can add light or audio-warning functions. Audio needs particular care because ICO guidance describes audio recording as especially intrusive and says continuous recording will usually be difficult to justify.
Visible CCTV signage is also required where people are being recorded. ICO guidance says signs should make clear that CCTV is operating, why it is being used and who can be contacted with queries.
