A simple example of proper PoE budgeting

Say you are quoting for:

  • 6 fixed 4MP cameras at 8W max each

  • 2 active deterrence cameras at 15W max each

  • 1 PTZ at 25W max

Your total maximum device load is:

6 x 8W = 48W
2 x 15W = 30W
1 x 25W = 25W

Total = 103W

Now imagine you choose a 120W switch because the maths just about works.

On paper, that may look acceptable. In reality, it is tight. You have left very little room for power variation, future additions or any small mismatch between assumed and actual load.

A better choice would usually be to step up to a switch with more budget than you strictly need today. That gives you space to commission properly, handle real operating conditions and avoid awkward conversations later.

In other words, do not buy the switch that merely survives the quote spreadsheet. Buy the switch that gives the job a margin for real life.

Spec the uplinks and layout properly as well

The power budget is only one part of the switching decision.

You also need to think about:

  • uplink capacity back to the recorder or network core

  • how many switches the site layout needs

  • whether the cameras are best split across areas or buildings

  • where future expansion is likely to happen

  • whether long-distance modes are actually appropriate for the job

A badly laid out switching design can create trouble even if the power budget is technically sufficient. Sometimes 2 smaller switches placed sensibly are better than 1 central switch trying to do everything.

Where compliance fits into the conversation

When people talk about CCTV compliance, they often jump straight to signage, retention and privacy. GOV.UK also says businesses using CCTV may need to register with the ICO and pay a data protection fee unless exempt.

But there is another side to compliance that is more practical: supplying a system that is actually fit for purpose.

If cameras drop out because the switch was underspecified, that is not just an inconvenience. It can leave gaps in coverage, missed events and an unhappy client. So while PoE budgeting is a technical issue, it also supports the wider goal of delivering a CCTV system that performs consistently when it is needed.

If you want fewer surprises, build this into every quote process:

  • Identify every PoE device

  • Use maximum power figures

  • Confirm the overall switch budget

  • Leave sensible spare capacity

  • Check cable routes and distance

  • Think about expansion before the job starts

  • Match switch choice to layout, not just camera count

  • Avoid assuming built-in NVR PoE is always enough

It sounds basic, but this is exactly the sort of discipline that protects margin and reduces snagging.
