Remote access can be one of the best-selling parts of a CCTV system, but it can also be one of the biggest sources of call-backs. You finish the install, the pictures are good, the recorder is working, and then 3 days later you get the message every installer knows too well: “I can’t view it on my phone.”

The problem is usually not one big technical failure. It is a stack of small decisions. Router settings, app setup, weak passwords, poor documentation, inconsistent port rules, and network kit that was treated as an afterthought instead of part of the job.

If you want fewer headaches, better handovers, and more profitable installs, remote access needs to be standardised. Not improvised.

Make remote access part of the system design, not an afterthought

A lot of problems start because remote viewing is discussed too late. The cameras and recorder are chosen first, then someone remembers the customer wants access from home, from the office, and from a mobile app while travelling.

At that point, you are reacting instead of designing properly.

A better approach is to treat remote access as part of the original spec. If the job is based around modern IP CCTV Cameras and IP CCTV NVRs, the network side of the installation needs the same care as camera placement and storage planning. Router first, recorder second

Installers often spend ages comparing cameras and recorders, then plug everything into whatever router happens to be on site. That is where trouble starts.

The router is not just the internet box in the corner. It is the gatekeeper. If it is badly configured, outdated, locked down by the ISP, or already overloaded with other services, your “simple” remote viewing setup can become a mess.

So before promising anything, check:

  • Who manages the router

  • Whether port forwarding is allowed

  • Whether the broadband is stable

  • Whether the site uses dynamic public IP addressing

  • Whether the customer is on CGNAT or a restrictive business setup

  • Whether firewall rules will need third-party involvement

That 10-minute check can save hours later.

It is also worth standardising your network hardware where needed. DDNS still has a place, but only when it is the right fit

It adds another layer to manage. Someone has to document it, keep credentials safe, and make sure renewal or service continuity is not forgotten. If the customer changes broadband provider, replaces the router, or loses the setup details, you are back on site sorting out something that is only half security and half admin.

That does not make DDNS bad. It just means you should use it deliberately. On the right site, it is a clean solution. On the wrong site, it becomes another support point.

If you want less aftercare, standardisation matters more than the specific method. Use the same naming convention, the same documentation process, the same router checks, and the same handover format every time.

P2P is often easier, but do not treat it as magic

For many jobs, P2P is the easiest route. Modern recorders increasingly support NAT, QR code setup and mobile access features that reduce the need for manual port forwarding.   • Document who has access

  • Remove old users when staff change

  • Avoid handing over systems with weak admin logins

In other words, easier access should not mean looser standards.

Cyber basics should be part of your install template

Customers are more aware of security than they used to be. They may not ask technical questions, but they do expect that a remotely accessible security system is actually secure.

That is why your install template should include a basic cyber checklist every time.

At minimum, standardise:

1. Password policy

No default logins. No recycled passwords. No “123456” jobs were done in a hurry.

2. User permissions

Do not leave everyone as admin. Create roles that fit the customer.

3. Firmware checks

You do not need to turn every install into a full IT project, but you should avoid deploying outdated kit without checking.

4. Network documentation

Record local IPs, remote method, user setup, router notes and recovery details.

5. Handover clarity

Make sure the customer knows what app they use, what credentials they hold, and who to contact if the broadband changes.
