If you’ve been installing CCTV for any length of time, you’ve probably had at least 1 job where the cameras were the easy part  and the data path was the real headache.

A car park that’s 300m from the comms room. A farm where trenching isn’t happening. A construction site that moves every few months. A listed building where you’re not allowed to chase walls. Or a client who wants coverage “over there” but can’t explain where the nearest network point actually is.

That’s where wireless telemetry and microwave links earn their keep. Used properly, they’re not a “last resort”. They’re a normal part of a modern CCTV toolkit — right alongside PoE switching, NVR sizing, storage, and sensible camera selection.

This guide breaks down where each option fits, what to watch for, and how to spec it confidently (without overcomplicating it).

First: what do we mean by “wireless telemetry” vs “microwave links”?

These terms get thrown around, sometimes loosely, so let’s set the scene in plain English.

Wireless telemetry (in CCTV projects)

Think “small bits of data” — signals and statuses more than high-bitrate video.

Typical telemetry-style uses:

  • Gate/door status (open/closed)

  • Alarm I/O triggers (trip a relay, start a preset, turn on a light)

  • Perimeter sensors and beams

  • Environmental monitoring (temp, humidity, cabinet door open)

  • Intercom/door entry events

  • Basic health checks (battery level, link status)

It’s usually low bandwidth, but it can be mission-critical because it’s tied to response and automation.

Microwave links (and point-to-point wireless bridges)

In CCTV land, most installers mean point-to-point (PtP) wireless when they say “microwave link” — a high-throughput wireless connection between 2 fixed points that behaves like an Ethernet cable.

That’s what you use when you need to move:

  • IP camera streams

  • NVR traffic

  • Remote LAN access for a building or compound

  • Backhaul from a pole, yard, gatehouse, or separate unit

Ofcom describes fixed terrestrial links as wireless systems operating between 2 or more fixed points across a wide range of frequency bands. 

Why these links matter more now (even with better broadband)

It’s easy to assume wireless links are only for “no broadband” areas, but real-world installs don’t work like that.

Yes, UK connectivity is improving — for example, Ofcom reports gigabit-capable broadband coverage has expanded significantly (with England reported at 88% of residential premises as of July 2025).
And mobile coverage keeps pushing on too — Ofcom figures referenced by the House of Commons Library put 4G coverage (from at least 1 operator) at 96% of UK landmass as of July 2025.

But here’s the installer reality: coverage isn’t the same as “a clean, reliable network path from camera to recorder.”

Even on a well-connected site, you can still have:

  • No practical cable route

  • Multiple buildings with no interlink

  • Long external runs that invite lightning/surge problems

  • Temporary compounds

  • Clients who won’t pay for civils

  • Sites where you need to isolate CCTV traffic away from the office network

Wireless (done properly) gives you options.

Where microwave links fit best in CCTV projects

1) Linking buildings without trenching

Classic use case: the main building has comms + NVR, but the warehouse, gatehouse or workshop is 100–800m away.

A proper PtP link lets you treat that remote building like it’s plugged in with Ethernet.

Your checklist:

  • Confirm true line-of-sight (not “I can sort of see it through trees”)

2) Remote cameras across yards, car parks, and perimeters

If you’re covering a yard, you’ll often have cameras on poles where no duct exists.

A PtP link works beautifully for getting those cameras back to your core network — and then you can choose the camera spec based on the job, like 6MP IP Cameras for general coverage or 8MP IP Cameras where you need extra pixel density for identification at distance.

Practical tip: the wireless link is part of your “camera performance”. If your link drops packets or jitters, your client won’t say “the bridge had interference” — they’ll say “the CCTV is unreliable.”

Construction sites, events, and short-term compounds are where wireless can save you weeks.

You can build a clean, repeatable deployable package:

  • Pole camera(s)

  • Local PoE switch

  • Wireless backhaul

  • Central recording and monitoring

4) Long-distance analogue transmission (legacy / niche)

Not every site is IP everywhere. Sometimes you’re dealing with legacy analogue, or you need to push a signal in a way that’s cost-effective.

5) Resilience and separation (when the client’s network is “messy”)

Some clients want CCTV completely separated from their business LAN.

A wireless bridge can create a dedicated CCTV path between buildings (or between a remote pole and your CCTV cabinet) without relying on the client’s switching, patching, or VLAN discipline.

Then recording becomes straightforward using your chosen IP CCTV NVRs, storage, and camera estate.

Where wireless telemetry fits best in CCTV projects

Telemetry is the unsung hero of “systems that actually work in real life”, because it links CCTV to what’s happening on site.

1) Triggered recording and smart responses

Examples you’ve probably done (or should):

  • Gate opens → record at higher frame rate + send alert

  • Beam broken → move PTZ preset + turn on white light

  • Door forced → tag footage + sounder output

That’s not about moving video wirelessly. It’s about moving events reliably.

2) Using CCTV as part of a wider security system

Clients increasingly want CCTV to integrate into:

  • intruder alarms

  • access control

  • intercoms

  • site lighting

  • remote monitoring

Wireless telemetry can make that easier where cabling is awkward — but you still need to treat it like critical infrastructure:

  • battery management

  • supervised links

  • interference planning

  • clear fault reporting

3) “Last 20 metres” problems

Sometimes your network is fine, but the sensor point is the issue:

Telemetry is often the neatest way to finish the job without turning it into a civil project.
